The Client

As one of the world's most important manufacturers of machine power, the client is an innovative developer of diesel engines, drives and propulsion systems for the marine, power, oil and gas, agriculture, construction, industrial, mining, rail and defense markets. The company has 250 employees in the United States servicing all of North America and annual revenue over US $20M.

The Challenge

In late 2004, the Client launched a strategic business initiative to grow the business by US $1 Billion in five years. The CEO determined that in order to realize this objective and sustain growth, a project management methodology was needed. The Client engaged Pcubed to develop the project management methodology and to train and coach sales resources in its use. The challenges were:

  • Constrained sales resources due to customer commitments and business travel
  • Low project management maturity
  • Absent project management communication and reporting

Other key challenges included:

  • Unclear portfolio of projects
  • Ad hoc governance and oversight of projects
  • The need to create substantial and sustained growth over a short period of time

The Pcubed Solution

Pcubed developed a series of deliverables to help the Client set up a customized system for their project management maturity to meet their business objectives. These included:

  • A project management framework using simple process, tools and techniques
  • A Steering Committee composed of the Client's management team members
  • Training for all sales resources in the use of the project management framework
  • Coaching and mentoring of Sales Project Managers as they deliver projects
  • Portfolio management reporting tools

Key elements of the solution included:

  • The successful achievement of the Company's revenue target
  • The integration of the project management disciplines throughout the organization
  • The deployment of a scheduling tool to refine the project management structure, organization and efficiencies
  • A proposal to leverage the project management approach as a standard across all key client initiatives and projects was approved and is being deployed
